Protecting the Mental Health of our School Leaders

The pressures associated with leading as Head can affect psychological and emotional-wellbeing. So why is this not at the forefront of many of our conversations regarding the education system? Disregard for mental health can have a major impact on the well-being of school leaders and consequently, on the those who they lead. Previous head teacher and current coach Viv Grant suggests an outline for implementing well-being policies to encourage psychological safety and support protection of mental health for head teachers. Appropriate well-being support can yield positive effects on the school environment allowing for thoughtful and conscious behavioral response to daily stressors. Well-being support also enables leaders to gain a sense of autonomy through developing strategies for resilience of self and staff.
