With the Summer holidays approaching, now is a good time to reflect on the pending journey for some new heads. Impressions made in the first few weeks can set a lasting tone for future relationships and expectation in school – for better or for worse. Thus, it can be agreed that relationships are the foundation for supporting great school leadership. Current Headteacher Simon Jackson shares advice from the front line on getting the first steps right, establishing who you are with your team, your vision and emphasising the importance of relationships for positive school outcomes. With almost 25 years teaching experience, Simon entrusts future heads with the vital moves for building a culture of authentic leadership upheld by the theoretical framework of core values and relationships. Leading a new school takes time but leading with your values sets the tone for the long journey ahead.
