Good teachers are part of the foundation for pupil success; good leaders are the underpinnings for school success. So, what is the gap between a good teacher progressing to a good leader? Why is the transition to school leadership such a challenging one for many good teachers? Whilst an overlap of capabilities exist, there remains significant differences in the competencies required for leadership. The question remains: is good leadership an innate characteristic? Former head teacher and educational consultant Jill Berry argues that for good teacher to advance to good leaders, it is adamant for schools to provide an environment enriched with challenge and support.
